Located just west of Palo Alto, California — home to Google, Facebook and Stanford University — is Atherton. It’s home to some of the richest people in the U.S., including former executive chairman of Google, Eric Schmidt, and chief operating officer of Facebook, Sheryl Sandberg. So it comes as no surprise that this town tucked away in California is the richest community in America, according to the Bloomberg Richest Places annual index.
Ranked No. 1 for the third year in a row, Atherton’s average household income in 2017 was $450,696. Coming in at No. 2 is Scarsdale, New York, a town located just north of Manhattan. Scarsdale’s average household income was $417,335. And Cherry Hills Village, Colorado, in the No. 3 spot, had an average household income of $394,259. Now, excuse us as we rethink our own day jobs…

The rest of the towns that made the top 10 include Los Altos Hills, California, at No. 4; Hillsborough, California, at No. 5; Short Hills, New Jersey, at No. 6; Highland Park, Texas, at No. 7; Darien, Connecticut, at No. 8; Bronxville, New York, at No. 9; and Glencoe, Illinois, at No. 10.
Glencoe made the biggest jump, climbing five spots and landing in the top 10 for the first time. Last year, they ranked No. 15.
According to Bloomberg, most of the towns in the top 100 are located in the New York City area and in California. But the towns outside those states that did rank, like Cherry Hills Village, located just outside of the downtown Denver area, have some high-profile residents, including Peyton Manning and John Elway.
You can take a look at the rest of the top 50 on Bloomberg’s website.
