Don’t Panic, But America Is Running Out of Dish Soap

Dish soap. It’s not the most exciting item in our home, but it’s something we use every day, and like other staples — toilet paper, pillows, forks — even though it’s not something we consciously think about very often, when it disappears we go into crisis mode. After all, without dish soap, how are we supposed to remove the schmaltz from our frying pans? The salted caramel residue from our sauce pots? The weird crusty stuff in that one bowl that’s been soaking for like three days now?

Well, it’s time to get ready for the worst, because in Walmarts around the country, people have spotted alarming signs warning of an impending nationwide dish soap shortage. So far, signs have been spotted at Walmart stores in Virginia, West Virginia, New York, and Pennsylvania.

The shortage, apparently, will last through December 1st. This is horrifying news for anyone who winds up on dish duty at Thanksgiving. And lest you think that this is some sort of scam or overreaction on the part of Walmart, we’ve got bad news – the dish soap shortage has been confirmed by Procter & Gamble, the makers of Dawn dish soap.

In a statement to Business Insider, P&G said, “We’re aware that some P&G hand dish products may be harder to find at the moment. For a brief period, demand exceeded what we were able to supply, but this was temporary. We value the loyalty people have to our brands, and apologize for this short-term inconvenience. Our team is working around the clock to refill shelves and supply is catching up with demand, so all sizes should be available soon.”
