How to organize your clutter

by

When was the last time you used your kitchen table for a meal? If you can’t remember, don’t worry: You’re not alone. Most people are guilty of using kitchen tables and countertops to unload mail, car keys and miscellaneous papers — but you can stop the cycle by cleaning everything up and putting it in its place. It may be a hard habit to break, but you have to start somewhere if you want to live a clutter-free existence.

Put it away

Whether it be a drawer, cabinet or shelf, designate an area for everything in your home, and force yourself to put the right thing in the right spot. Put a shelf or end table near your front door for your keys, briefcase, mail or anything else you usually dump on your kitchen table when you walk in the door.

Eliminate the extra

Once a day, once a week or once a month, go through your things and get rid of a couple you no longer need or use. Stop holding onto things for sentimental reasons or in case you might need them in the future. If yo
u’ve never used it, or haven’t used it in the last six months, chances are you won’t. Donate it, recycle it or throw it out, and you’ll be well on your way to organizing your home.

stop the clutter before it starts

Clutter often builds up because you buy things you don’t need. Before you make your next purchase, think hard about what you’re buying. Do you really need it? Will you truly use it? Is there room for it? If you can’t honestly say “yes” to these questions, put the item down and walk away from it.

no more junk mail

Eliminate the piles of paper on your tables and counters by unsubscribing to magazines you don’t read. Get taken off junk mail lists, too. Not only will you eliminate the clutter in your life, but you’ll also help the environment by preventing additional paper waste.

guerrilla-style cleaning

This may be difficult, but grab a garbage bag and throw away everything that you don’t use. Don’t dwell on your possessions; if you don’t use it anymore, pitch it! Throw away the trash, but recycle or donate items that are still useable.

unclutter your life

It’s not complicated — it just takes some discipline. Once you organize your clutter, you’ll feel more at ease and less stressed when you’re relaxing in your home.
