Beat the heat with sweatproof makeup

Because of the sweltering temperatures in the summer, our makeup tends to go array by melting off. Find out how to sweatproof your makeup whether you’re splashing around at the beach or jamming out to a concert at the park.

Lighten up

For a summer day, you don’t need to wear a lot of makeup. Switch your liquid foundation to a tinted moisturizer or just bronzer instead. Tinted moisturizers do double-duty because they can hydrate your skin while covering imperfections.

Here are some of my favorite tinted moisturizers:

Clinique Moisture Sheer Tint

This fabulous tinted moisturizer will hydrate your skin and even out skin tone, while protecting your skin with an antioxidant complex and SPF 15 sunscreen. It’s oil-free, so it can handle the heat. Get Clinique Moisture Sheer Tint directly from Clinique, at Sephora or most major department stores for $26.

Juice Beauty SPF 30 Tinted Moisturizer

For extra protection in a natural beauty product, this Juice Beauty tinted moisturizer is ideal. It’s made with organic white grape and pomegranate juices. It supplies your skin with antioxidants and essential nutrients. $29 at Sephora.

Stila Sheer Color Tinted Moisturizer

This long-lasting tinted moisturizer can take the heat. Stila Sheer Color offers sun protection and see-through color to even out your skin for a flawless finish. You can get it from Sephora and several online retailers for $30.

Trish McEvoy Protective Shield Moisturizer

This terrific tinted moisturizer is long-lasting and sweatproof. I have worn this moisturizer to ball games, to the beach and other outdoor events. It protects your skin with SPF 15, reduces fine lines and provides just enough color. Get this oil-free, fragrance-free moisturizer at Nordstrom and other retailers for $40.

Eye makeup

Play up your eyes in the summer by using light eye shadows and brown mascara, instead of black. Eyeshadow tend to crease and smear in the heat and humidity. Be sure to use a primer as an eye shadow base.

Apply the primer over your entire lid and extend upwards to the browbone. Apply a gold eyeshadow over the lid and add a cream color from the crease to the browbone.

Curl your eyelashes and then add one coat of smudgeproof mascara in brown. You can skip the eyeliner for daytime. Keep it in your makeup bag if you will be staying out all day and into the evening. You can add liner and a deeper lipstick color for evening.

Lips and cheeks

Keep your lip and cheek color light and simple. Pink and peach work for the summer. If you are wearing bronzer, you can skip the cheek color. If not, use a light shade of blush on the apples of your cheek.

Make sure to use a powder-based blush in the warmer months because gel and cream blushes tend to fade fast in the heat.

For lips, instead of lipstick, use a tinted lip balm or pink lipgloss. Gloss will last longer if you apply a light dusting of translucent powder before application.

Look for makeup with SPF 15 or higher if you are going to spend prolong periods in the sunlight. Carry blotting papers to rid your skin of oil and freshen makeup throughout the day. Always wear sunglasses to protect your eyes. Consider wearing a hat to protect your hair and scalp, as well as shade your face.
