But, I already work full time. I have no time for volunteering.
Fantastic! In this economy, it’s nice to have a job. Still, somewhere in a busy weekly routine, there’s an hour or two for giving. Sometimes volunteering becomes such an important part of our lives that the hours of giving grow even longer…and we do it because we care.
Take, for example, Krissie of Cave Creek, Arizona who works full time with special needs high school kids. She and her husband find time in their home and in their hearts to volunteer with a community animal rescue as cat and dog fosters. They take in special needs animals and care for them until the animals are well enough for their forever homes. Krissie also helps with pet adoptions and fundraising events for the organization. When a big fundraiser is in the works, Krissie may donate up to 30 hours a week of her time.
What does she enjoy most about volunteering? Krissie says, “I think when you volunteer you get much more out of it than you ever give. It is one of the most rewarding experiences you will ever know.”
“If you have much, give of your wealth; If you have little, give of your heart.”
– Arab Proverb quotes
But, I just lost my job. I have no time for volunteering.
Yes. Job-hunting is an important and time-consuming activity. Still, volunteering may help you put things in perspective. It’s also a good way to help brighten your outlook on life and how you feel about yourself. Volunteering also provides an excellent opportunity for networking.
“You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.”
– Kahlil Gibran
But, I have a family.
What a wonderful way to let children experience the joy of looking beyond themselves and giving. Taking on a volunteer project as a family activity not only sends a positive message to children, but also is an opportunity for a family to share valuable time together on a worthwhile cause. Let the children take part in the selection of the family volunteering project. Being a part of the decision making will make it important part of their lives, as well.
“It was only a sunny smile, And little it cost in the giving. But like morning light, it scattered the night, And made the day worth living.”
