Hit the Road with Harley-Davidson

Is it Hereditary?

By Darnell

June 1, 2009

Often, when you hear riders talk about how they got
started riding a common thread is that a family member rides as well. This may lead one to believe that motorcycling is hereditary. I have found that in many instances this is true. In my family it
skipped a generation, just like the gene for twins.

My grandfather rode Harley-Davidson motorcycles for many years.

One of my uncles (and his wife) rode. That’s it.

A few years ago at my grandmother’s funeral I realized that of my grandmother’s 22 grandchildren, most of them rode motorcycles. The reason I bring this up is that starting to ride is easier if you
have built in support, such as a parent, sibling, or spouse. I had been on my own for many years before I was in a position to start riding. For many, like myself there is not a built in support
system. What is a woman to do?

Take a Rider’s Edge New Rider Course.

It is a great way to get started. Many years ago, I took a motorcycle safety class to obtain my motorcycle endorsement. I still remember and use the lessons I learned in the class. The course is
taught in a controlled environment by folks who are encouraging and know how to get you rolling. In fact, I still take classes to keep my skills sharp. You can get more information on Rider’s Edge
on the Harley Davidson website.

The Journey Continues – Day 2

I awoke to birds singing! No rain?
After completing almost 540 miles yesterday in rain, we were ready for a drier ride today. But the clouds were low and gray, showing signs of rain so on came the rain gear. We rode through the
cool, crisp air to stop for breakfast at a small café on the Arkansas River. In the river were groups of people white water rafting. Some people may think we are crazy for riding our bikes
across country, but I have to say rafting in this cold weather in the wild rapids is crazy!

After breakfast we met up with friends who were riding with us to Scottsbluff for the night. Our friends are from South Africa and later this year the will be guiding us through South Africa on motorcycles! As we continued on in the
rain our friends assured that we would not ride in rain while in their country. I was starting to think that’s where I’d have to go to get out of the rain! I then remembered I could be in a car and
how boring that would be!

The day ended with a relaxing ride through miles and miles of rolling hills speckled with cows and a few antelope. Even though we endured another day of rain, it was great ride with friends and it
would not stop the enjoyable evening we had catching up with old friends and meeting new ones. Once again, looking forward to bluer skies tomorrow…
