How to choose a cosmetic surgeon

Plastic surgery is a big decision. Before going under the knife, it’s important to do your research and select the right doctor for you. Follow these steps to help choose a cosmetic surgeon.

Step 1: Ask around for referrals

If you know someone who has recently had plastic surgery and is happy with the results, ask for a referral to their doctor. Be sure the surgeon specializes in the procedure you are considering.

Step 2: Make sure the surgeon is board certified

If a cosmetic surgeon is board certified it verifies that he/she has had the proper accredited training program and has passed all the examination. It also insures the surgeon adheres to the ethics standards of the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Step 3: Set up a consultation

After you have narrowed down a list of three or four possible surgeons, set up a consultation where you can get to know the surgeon and ask questions. Be sure to ask where the surgery will be performed (office operating room, surgery center or hospital). Inquire about costs and any financing options. Be sure to reveal any current medical conditions and medications you are taking.

Step 4: Inquire about preparation and recovery

Ask about any pre-surgery appointments that will be necessary, as well as any lifestyle changes you will need to make prior to the surgery. Another factor is recovery time and limitations.

Step 5: Weigh your options

After considering the cost, the specialization and alternatives other than plastic surgery, you can compare a few surgeons and determine which one is right for you. Don’t overlook bedside manner, personality and rapport when selecting your cosmetic surgeon.
