When you think of spring fashion, a few things come to mind: flowers, pastels and ruffles. We hate to say it, but that’s kind of expected, borderline boring. This spring, add some pizzazz to your sweet spring style with some edgy updates. ‘First, take inventory of your current wardrobe,’ says style expert Nicole Brewer, a celebrity stylist and former fashion director. ‘Before you spend a bundle, see which fashion favorites deserve to stick around.’
We’ll still see the florals, pastels and ruffles we’ve come to know and love, but a touch of edge can make a sweet ensemble a bit more fashion forward. ‘This season, the sheer factor will be key to
standing out in the crowd,’ says designer Sara Mique. ‘The sheer cutout doesn’t have to be at the waist line; it can be something as simple as a top with a sheer insert across the neckline. Great
coverage and style at the same time!’
Trench Coat Revamp
The classic trench is the fashion piece that keeps on giving. From neutral to bright colors, you’ll need it for those rainy and windy days. However, don’t just sport the trench as you know it. Give
your outerwear a ‘pop,’ by swapping out its belt, advises Brewer. ‘It’ll be brand new again,’ Brewer points out. Try a belt like this one from Arden B, or go the DIY route and whip one up out of a
bold or printed ribbon. Twist bow stretch belt, $19.50 at ArdenB.com, Belted ruffle trench, $59.97 at NYandcompany.com.
Lace and Leather
Take the cropped leather jacket that was so hot this past fall and wear it over a lacy camisole, or even lingerie, Brewer suggests. ‘Layering lingerie under jackets and cardigans create a soft,
feminine look,’ she adds. It’s also very chic and fresh for the upcoming season.

Chain Links
One surefire way to update your spring wardrobe is by showcasing a bold accessory. Those plain, solid tanks of spring can be dressed up with something as simple as long, layered necklaces. It’s
chic and effortless. ‘Pull out those link chains and geometric shapes, and pile on the glam,’ says Brewer. Choose from silver and gold, and make sure your personality shines through.

Sassy Booties
You’ve seen booties all fall and winter. This spring, booties will still dominate wardrobes. But, instead of slouchy and sleek ones, booties with cut-out details will be hot, says Brewer. ‘[Go for]
peep-toes and perforated design elements,’ she explains. They’re the fresh and modern versions of the spring sandal we’re already familiar with.

Revealing Tops
We’re not talking about low-cut numbers! ‘Off-the-shoulder tops, lightweight knits and jersey tees go perfectly with trousers, jeans and skirts,’ Brewer points out. ‘Reveal your neckline and show
some shoulder for a subtle hint of sexy.’ Keep it classy though, girls. We don’t want to look slutty!

Bold Hues
‘Last but not least always consider color,’ Mique demands. ‘Interesting dyeing techniques in vibrant colors make a simple garment outstanding.’ This spring, you’ll find some key pieces, from
dresses to shirts, that do just that. Experiment with teals and oranges–the sky is the limit. Just don’t mix too many colors or you’ll end up looking like an art project.
