Visit the Kentucky bourbon country trail

Bourbon cuisine

If bourbon inspired cuisine appeals to you, then check out the exquisite food prepared at many of Louisville’s trendy restaurants including Proof on Main, the 21C Museum Hotel, a boutique property just voted the number one hotel in America by Conde Nast Traveler’s readers.

Other eateries of note include Marker’s Mark Bourbon House & Lounge in the heart of downtown Louisville and the Bourbons Bistro – three miles from the downtown core on Frankfort Avenue in the Clifton area.

Bourbons Bistro’s chef, Michael Crouch suggests that women would enjoy cooking with bourbon because it adds a different aspect to a lot of foods especially with desserts or a sauce since bourbon has a lot of sweetness to it. A lot of bourbons have a vanilla note; some have a bit of a chocolate note to them. For entrees, some bourbon has a smoky flavour that goes great with meats especially bacon.

“Everybody cooks with wine, but our restaurant is themed around bourbon, so we try to open people’s eyes to the flavors that you can’t from wines and other liquors,” Chef Crouch says.

Crouch suggests as a beginner in your own kitchen, you can incorporate bourbon in a marinade, a sauce or use it to flambé a dessert or even use it in a sweet omelet or French toast. The chef says that in the recent years he has noticed Kentucky women both cooking and consuming more bourbon and credits the Bourbon Country Trail and the Urban Bourbon Trail in helping popularize this whiskey with women.

While visiting Louisville, you can pick up your Bourbon Country Passport at any Urban Bourbon Trail bar, the Louisville Visitors Center, or request passport and book a package online at www.justaddbourbon.com or by calling, 1-888-LOUISVILLE.
