Moms know that a change of season means a whole new wardrobe — for the kids. But how about sprucing up your own closet? When money is tight and time is fleeting, a few key pieces can update your wardrobe for the season. Kristin Grothe, a stylist at Hot Mama boutique in Littleton, Colorado, helps moms find wardrobe pieces to fit their lifestyles and body types. She shares some timely advice for moms on a budget (and really, aren’t we all?) looking for the best buys this summer.
Stripes
A classic striped pattern is always fresh and versatile. “Striped tanks and tees are great because they keep the eye moving, detracting from trouble spots,” says Grothe. Stripes come in every price point, size and color, so finding the perfect top should be as easy as a quick trip to your favorite discount store or online sale rack.
Bohemian
The Bohemian look comes and goes, but it’s a style worth embracing, especially if you’re a mom with comfort on your mind. You only need one or two pieces to really work this fun, effortless trend. “Bohemian pieces are organic, casual and natural-looking,” says Grothe. “Look for crocheted tops, flowery prints, ruffles, textured fabrics and cool details.” You can wear this look during a daytime play date or dress it up for date night.
Accessories
A wide range of accessories can make up for a limited wardrobe. Add interest and texture to any outfit by slipping on some jewelry, a hat, a scarf or a leather bag. “Summer is the perfect time for pops of color,” says Grothe. “This season, bright bags are everywhere.” You don’t have to match your bag to your shoes or outfit. Choose a solid color that you love (after all, a “best buy” is an item that you’ll actually use). “Tribal beaded necklaces and big, statement rings are also very popular,” says Grothe. Check out these top 10 summer accessories.
Flowy dresses
There’s nothing better than a pretty, loosely-fit dress when you’re getting dressed amongst the morning chaos. Casual sandals dress it down, while wedges and a great beaded necklace amp up the look. Either way, it makes sense to have at least one in your closet. “Flowy dresses are comfortable and so easy to wear,” says Grothe. “They give you room to breathe while still looking stylish.” Choose a neckline that flatters your shape, whether it be a halter, v-neck or asymmetric. Opt for a cotton or cotton-blend fabric that is soft and easy to maintain.
Boyfriend jeans
The boyfriend jean is quickly becoming a classic. The rolled hem, relaxed fit and slightly masculine silhouette offers a casual, chic option for summer. These jeans pair perfectly with feminine tops, tanks and cardigans. “This look is a little slouchy but still very flattering, especially with the right top and shoes,” says Grothe. Try them with a pedicure-friendly wedge sandal and a feminine top.
