Feng shui is the art of creating environments that act to enhance our lives. Homes have an important impact on our prosperity, health, relationships and success. Your entryway sets the tone as the first space experienced in a house. It directs all energy coming in.
Robin’s Top 6 Tips to Zen Out Your Entryway
According to feng shui principles, entrances determine the overall fortune and happiness of a family. Feng shui offers “cures” to help boost positive energy even when the optimum suggestion is not possible. Here my top tips to Zen out your foyer:
1. Keep energy flowing
The front of a staircase should not face the doorway. The flow of energy into the home will be funneled up the staircase, preventing energy from moving through the rest of the space. If you already have a staircase facing your front door, place a plant or sculpture at the bottom of the staircase.
2. Mirror, mirror on the wall
A wall opposite the front door blocks the flow of energy into the home. Your first instinct might tell you to hang a mirror there to open the space, but it actually bounces the energy back out of the house. Instead, place a landscape facing the doorway. It attracts the eye, gives the space depth, and gives the illusion that that there is a view beyond the wall.
Mirrors are still great accessories in a foyer, especially if it is small, narrow or dark. Place them on walls on either side of the main doorway, at a height that reflects the light, to make the entrance feel larger.
3. Let the light shine
Speaking of light, foyers should always have plenty of it! A “light,” positive feeling upon entering is important. Find a light fixture that gives off the most light possible. You might even consider placing sconces on the wall.
4. Color me Zen
Changing your paint color is another easy remedy to make your entryway more feng shui friendly. Paint your front door a shade of red to attract positive energy or black to attract wealth. If the foyer is dark and closed in, paint the hallway a light color and use brightly colored accessories.
5. Keep it clutter free
The foyer provides a transition from the outside world to the inside world. Clutter stops energy from flowing and can have a psychologically negative effect, so it’s important that energy coming into your home is unobstructed. Keep your foyer clean and organized by using an umbrella stand, a console table with drawers, and coat hooks. Avoid keeping items such as shoes on the floor.
6. Amplify energy
Crystals amplify positive energy and are a common remedy in feng shui. If your entry door lies at the end of a long hallway, all of the energy from the hall will rush into your home. Placing a crystal over your door will calm the energy and create a more balanced flow. Adding a crystal chandelier in a room that has a stairway across from the entrance door will balance the energy in the room.
