10 Easy green changes you’ll actually make

You don’t have to have to drive an electric car, compost your waste or forgo showers (icky) in an effort to be a better global citizen. Besides operating under the “reduce, reuse and recycle” plan, the simplest things you use or do every day can be considered “green” with just the slightest tweaks.

Adjust your thermostat.

Set your thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter and a few degrees higher in the summer to save on heating and cooling costs.

Green-clean your home.

Stop buying household cleaners that are potentially toxic to both you and the environment. Use simple ingredients such as plain soap, water, baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), vinegar, washing soda (sodium carbonate), lemon juice and borax, and save money at the same time.

use Energy-efficient light bulbs.

Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFLs) use 66 percent less energy than standard incandescent bulbs and last up to 10 times longer. Replacing a 100-watt incandescent bulb with a 32-watt CFL can save $30 in energy costs over the life of the bulb.

Green your garden.

Plant your garden with the flowers and bushes that are indigenous to your area. That way, normal rain will be sufficient. If you live in an area without much rainfall, look for drought-tolerant plants.

Change your air filters.

Clean your furnace’s air filter monthly during heavy usage to ensure maximum airflow.
