Warm and cozy fall decorating tips

The prospect of moving back indoors after the summer may seem a bit of a letdown, but it doesn’t have to be that way. In fall, nature is bursting with vivid colors, interesting textures and amazing aromas that you can bring into every room in your home to make the transition warm, cozy and visually dynamic.

Bring fall indoors

Whatever your décor style happens to be, add a grace note and create interest by including natural elements in your rooms.

Natural elements that blend inviting colors and textures include:

  • Gourds
  • Bowls filled with apples or other fall fruits
  • Pine cones in wooden bowls
  • Vases with dry arrangements
  • Fall wreaths

Fab furniture for fall

To transform a room in minutes, rearrange the furniture. DeAnna Radaj, author of Designing the Life of Your Dreams from the OutsideIn, recommends adopting a new focus in your fall furniture placement. If your floor plan has been designed around a great garden view for the warmer months, now is the time to change your grouping to focus on the hearth instead.

Give your sofa a fall makeover

For a quick furniture makeover, try a few slipcovers. Those baggy, wrinkly dropcloths are out, replaced by snug-fitting, stylish and easy-to-care-for options in the latest colors. The folks at SureFit.com have a line of imitation leather and suede slipcovers that will make you want to stretch out with a good book and a cup of cocoa.

Add a pop of fall color in small accent pieces

Accent pieces don’t have to be large (or expensive) to make an impact. Invite the season – and latest decorating colors – into your home with vases, task lighting, candles, bowls, picture frames, pillows and throws. Carole Ann Patterson, an interior designer with Miller Brothers Furniture, recommends using creamy caramels, cinnamon, forest green, gold and bronze. Other popular options are deep plum and burnt orange.
