Sequins can go from classy to trashy fast, depending on how and when you wear them. The oh-so-shiny item typically has been relegated to trim on a sweater or club clothes, but this fall — particularly for the holidays — sequins are all aglow for all ages. If you’re an older woman who’s still in good shape, you can sport the glittery part in some of the same body parts as your younger counterparts can.
We asked Alison Deyette, TheFind.com shopping and style expert, for some sparkling tips for each decade of our lives:
20s
Seek out a sequined tube, tank or mini dress. Generally, you can flaunt more skin, so a mini is spot on for your age. Look at styles from Haute Hippie, Alice + Olivia, ABS, Michael Kors and Robert Rodriguez.
20s to 30s
Try a loose tank like the ones from BCBG and Magashoni this season. The look is fun and spirited, easily becoming the item for your quick change from day to evening.
Sequined pants or leggings sure aren’t for everyone — you need slender legs — but they’re fun to pair with a casual button down or t-shirt. Pull on a denim jacket to top off the look or wear a tuxedo-style jacket for a black-tie affair. Look for sequined pants from J. Crew, Devi Kroell, Blumarine, Isabel Marant and Alice + Olivia.
30s & 40s
A pencil skirt is one of the best sequined items to choose. It works for any cocktail party invite and looks elegant when worn with a tailored button-down blouse in silk or cotton. Plus, a sequined skirt usually has some stretch to hug your curves. Brands such as J. Crew and Pink Tartan offer varied styles and color mixes.
30s, 40s & 50s
Opt for a sequined bolero or fitted cardigan — a feminine, classic piece that has the added kick of shine. This is the piece to buy when you want to give sequins a test drive without being overly daring.
50s
Go for a sequined blazer such as those from Net-a-porter.com and DKNY. Look for styles that clearly are meant for fussy fetes and that don’t overwhelm you body shape. A glittery blazer always looks sophisticated when worn with a solid pant or straight skirt.
The point is to keep the shine of sequins to one element of your outfit at a time. Keep the rest of your ensemble simple in tailoring, and avoid big, bold jewelry.
