5 Dreamy winter vacations

by

Stowe, Vermont

At 4,395 feet, Stowe’s Mount Mansfield is the highest peak in Vermont, one reason the region is world-famous for winter sports. (The idyllic village is also where the Sound of Music‘s famed von Trapp family made their home after leaving Austria). When the first snow falls, skiers and snowboarders from around the world flock to the area to experience the historic terrain. Skiing and snowboarding are not the only draws—the area boasts sleigh riding, dog sledding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and ice-skating. Stay at the luxurious Stowe Mountain Lodge in the center of town, and enjoy a heated indoor-access outdoor pool, two award-winning restaurants and plush guest rooms. Rooms start at $259 per night.
