Change your skincare regimen when winter weather arrives in order to maintain healthy, fresh skin all season. We consulted Elizabeth K. Hale, M.D., Clinical Associate Professor of Dermatology at NYU School of Medicine and practicing dermatological surgeon at for an expert opinion on how to keep your skin healthy this winter. Dr Hale providing these skin-saving tips.
Try a heavy-duty moisturizer
In the wintertime, it is essential to moisturize more often because it helps your startum corneum to retain moisture. Well-hydrated skin acts as a good barrier to the outside world. During the winter, that barrier is not intact (and not as effective at keeping allergens out) so your dry, flaky skin can irritate more easily and be more susceptible to rashes. Although you may usually wear a lightweight cream, switching to a heavier one will help trap the moisture into your skin. The best time to apply is immediately after a shower or bath, when your body can best seal in the moisture.
Reduce the Retin-A
Cut down on the frequency of acne product use such as Retin-A and alpha hydroxy acids which often dry out your skin. These products can ultimately cause additional skin irritation if used too frequently.
Use year-round sun protection
All too often, many believe that just because summer’s over, they don’t need to protect their skin from the sun. On the contrary, UVA rays are present throughout every season and because they have longer wavelengths, they penetrate all surfaces including clouds, car windows and office windows. These rays are primarily responsible for the aging of skin and cause sun spots, wrinkles and uneven skin texture. These effects can be prevented or minimized by using sunscreen year-round.
A great option is Coppertone Sensitive Skin Faces SPF 50, which provides effective yet gentle sun protection for those with sensitive skin. It’s fragrance-free, hypoallergenic and is powered by zinc oxide — it’s even been clinically proven appropriate for sensitive skin including for those with conditions such as rosacea. The 2-ounce bottle is perfect for throwing in your bag before going outdoors. Remember UV rays bounce off the snow!
