It’s that time of year again, when we look back at the past year and make a note of things we’d like to do better. Often it’s to exercise more or eat better, but what about minimizing our carbon footprint? Eco-resolutions are becoming more and more popular as people aim to do their part for the Earth. We’ve put together some simple ways for you to green your home design and decor.
Green home design tip #1
Get growing with live houseplants
Having some greenery around the house is a great way to add green style to your space. Choose a few hardy houseplants (i.e., the ones almost anyone can keep alive) and watch your home come to life. Some options include snake plant, pothos, philodendron and spider plant. Literally anywhere you have light coming into your home can grow a plant. A corner filled with greenery makes more of a statement than any vase or other decorative item ever could.
Green home design tip #2
Shop local for home furnishings
Before you buy your next piece of furniture, take a look at where it was manufactured. Was it shipped from halfway around the world? Rather than buying from a big-box store, do some research to find furnishings made in your own state, city or even hometown. You can even try scouring local antique shops for smaller items like end tables and kitchen stools. A little refinishing (and elbow grease) is all it takes to whip something back into shape.
Green home design tip #3
Go organic with indoor paint
As you give your home a design facelift, consider using organic paints where you can. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), indoor air is three times more polluted than outdoor air, and is considered one of the top five hazards to human health (with paints and finishes among the leading culprits). To combat the toxic load, choose organic paints and finishes that are free of toxins. Ecos and BioShield are two options.
Green home design tip #4
Try eco-friendly flooring
If you’re thinking about new flooring, why not go green? There are several options to consider when it comes to sustainable flooring. You can choose from the following:
- Bamboo: A renewable resource that makes for durable flooring
- Linoleum: This option is non-toxic, biodegradable and naturally anti-bacterial
- Cork: Long-lasting, water-resistant and stylish
- Reclaimed wood: Flooring salvaged from old barns, homes and factories rather than forests.
Green home design tip #5
Less is more with home decor
One of the easiest ways to stick to a green design resolution is to realize that less is more when it comes to decorating your home. The less you buy, the less you’re contributing to the over-the-top consumerism that is one cause of the environmental issues we’re experiencing — and besides, minimalism is chic. The less clutter you have, the nicer your home will look.
