Lacquered decorative objects from Asia were all the rage in Europe during the 1600s and their appeal as home accessories hasn’t faded since. Lacquer is a multi-layered varnish technique that creates a beautiful and durable finish. It comes in any color imaginable and ranges in sheen levels from matte to glossy.
In contemporary design, lacquered accessories and furniture are on the rise. High gloss lacquer is a wonderful way to add a fun and interesting element to any room. Here are a few of my favorite lacquered accessories for every room in your home.
Foyer
Every great foyer needs a mirror! Don’t we all have to check ourselves out before we leave the house? Do it in style with the Chloe or Claire mirrors from Bungalow 5. They are affordable, great looking and will add just the right amount of pizzazz to your entryway. Since I believe that accessorizing is key, complete your look by placing this lacquered Jonathan Adler umbrella stand next to your door.
Living Room
Lacquered furniture adds a bit of “chic” to any living space. I love the way this Laurent Charlet coffee table features lacquer in an unexpected way. By combing stained natural wood with a lacquered detail on the inside of the open space, this designer creates a piece that can be integrated into many room styles.
Dining room
Your dining room table or chairs don’t have to be lacquered for you to enjoy the high style look that a lacquered piece gives a space. A lacquered buffet table like this one adds a great detail, or keep it simple and just dress up your table with these decorative placemats.
Kitchen
When it comes to kitchen/entertaining accessories, lacquered serving trays are a must! I love these square trays from Gracious Home. For a wider variety of colors, try these lacquered wooden trays from West Elm. Use the trays to serve guests at your next dinner party or leave them on your coffee table to add a splash of color to your living room.
Bathroom
I love to add personality to a bathroom! These brightly lacquered tissue boxes by Jonathan Adler do the job perfectly! The designer also offers soap dispensers, wastebaskets, and tumblers to complete the look and pull the bathroom together.
Bedroom
Add some flair to your most personal space! A pair of lacquered nightstands can change your entire look. These Ava side tables by Worlds Away are fun and high styled. If you aren’t ready to change your furniture, try these sleek lacquered wood boxes. They will look great displayed prominently in your bedroom while helping you organize our clutter.
For you DIYers, lacquered furniture is heaven! You can change any piece of furniture from drab to fab, with just a bit of color. See how I transformed this old desk and gave it new life — and a whole new look — all with only a fresh coat of paint and a new lacquer finish.
