Best beauty-boosting health habits

Beauty products are great. Trust us, we can’t get enough of them. But there’s no substitute for good health habits. If you do your best to feel good, your looks will benefit naturally. Here are some of the best health habits to start right now if you want to look your best.

Be healthy, be heautiful!

Get a good sleep

There is no better beauty aid than a good night’s rest. Getting six to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep every night will ensure your skin is clear and healthy-looking. A full night’s sleep will also ensure you avoid puffy eyes, while skimping on shut-eye can leave you looking pale and ashy with dark circles under your eyes — never a good look for anyone.

Drink up

Our bodies are made up of 70 percent water so it makes sense that in order for it to function properly, you need to drink water regularly. But water not only helps you feel good, it can help you look good. Staying hydrated ensures skin stays supple and moisturized from the inside out. Carry a reusable bottle with you (in your purse or gym bag) and trade sugary soda for H2O with a squeeze of citrus.

Don’t discount diet

You are what you eat, so making sure your body is getting the right nutrients is important for overall health and for looking great. This means focusing on fruits and vegetables (especially leafy greens and colorful vegetables which help fight wrinkle-causing free radicals), lean protein, low-fat dairy and whole grains. Diet deficiencies can show up on your face, meaning dry, flakey skin, redness and blemishes.

Get moving

Exercise not only helps you maintain a healthy weight and makes you feel good, buring calories also boosts circulation, leaving you with a healthy, natural glow. Aim to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity five times a week. Go for a walk, hit the gym or try a new sport – anything that will get you moving.

Relax

Stress can be a huge burden on your body inside and out, which means when you’re stressed out, you not only feel it, but look it, too. Stress can cause blemishes, dry skin and redness, or just leave you looking pale with dark circles under your eyes. Try to do some relaxation techniques before bed, like simple yoga poses or meditation, or go for a moderately-paced walk when you feel yourself getting tense. The point is to release stress rather than hold onto it where it can wreak havoc on your complexion.

We asked how many hours of sleep you get each night.

Here’s what you said:

  • Tamara A:  I think that totally depends on whether or not you have a baby/toddler…
  • Wendy T:  I’m lucky to get 6-7 hours. Usually it’s 3-4 hours though.
  • Penny S:  ?5-7 hours
  • Kim B:  ?4-6 hours, if I am lucky…insomnia, school, and kid keep me up a lot
  • Susan J: ?  2 hrs, if i’m lucky.
  • LaurenC7:  8 hours!
