Step 1: pick a theme.
Do this before you even send out the invites. Why not use the season to your advantage and host an outdoor garden party? Aimee Beatty, Pier 1 Imports’ in-house stylist, suggests combining the spring birthday theme with an Easter tradition: an an egg hunt. Beatty suggests hiding eggs as well as spring decorations such as ornaments in the backyard, and whoever finds the goods gets to take them home as a party favor.

Step 2: Send out invitations, & request responses.
Having a headcount makes party planning so much easier, regardless of the occasion. Send out invites in plenty of time for guests to make arrangements to attend, but not so early that they forget about the invitation altogether. Three weeks out is generally plenty of time.
Step 3: Incorporate your theme into your party decor.
As you shop for decorations, keep your theme in mind — but present it in subtle ways. Beatty suggests incorporating “garden-themed dinnerware and serveware for an instant spring statement.” And while spring is synonymous with Easter, your springtime birthday bash doesn’t have to be awash in pastels. Step 4: Serve springtime fare.
Spring is the perfect time to host a beautiful birthday brunch or an early evening casual affair. Whatever time you choose, make sure the food is light and fresh. Forget the heavy hot meals of winter. Think fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables, along with a few light bites. Beatty notes that tasting parties are a big trend this spring; for such a gathering, offer guests a variety of bite-sized appetizers as well as tasty desserts.

Step 5: Don’t force a set schedule.
Your party does not have to have an agenda for every minute. While entertainment options — such as the aforementioned egg and decoration hunt (or croquette, anyone? — are nice, many people are uncomfortable with traditional “party games” or being the center of attention as a big crowd sings “Happy Birthday.” Be sensitive to your guest of honor and feel out your party crowd. If everyone is mingling and having a good time, don’t interrupt the flow.
Step 6: Sit back & relax!
As the party begins, greet incoming guests, get them drinks, let them know where the food is, and lead them to a group with a convo already in progress. Once you’ve made sure all your guests are settled in, you can relax, mingle and enjoy the results of your hard work.
