How to wear the ’70s look

For spring, ’70s styles are back in a big way. To rock this style, don’t dress head-to-toe in ’70s fashions — you don’t want to look like you are headed to a costume party. Instead, pick a few retro pieces and incorporate them into your existing wardrobe.

Slide back into the ’70s with these sassy styles

Slip into flared jeans

Put away your skinny jeans in the back of your closet. Flared jeans and wide-leg pants are a throwback to the ’70s and very trendy right now. You can wear flared jeans with everything from a billowy blouse to a halter top. The lean flared jeans pictured here are just $60 from Gap.

For the office, select a pair of high-waisted, wide-leg trousers in a 1970s-inpsired fabric, such as chambray. Chambray is a soft, blue cotton fabric that is used to make everything from work shirts to dresses.

Bye bye skinny jeans!

Put on platform shoes

Platform shoes have been back in the fashion scene for a few years now. And this season, they are dominating more than ever. Platform sandals are a subtle way to ease into the retro trend this spring. Pick up a pair of sky-high shoes with a 2-inch platform and a 4- or 5-inch chunky heel.

If you want to be more comfortable, flatforms are “in” for spring. Flatforms have a wedge heel that is equal height to the front platform — so your foot stays flat. Michael Kors, 3.1 Philip Lim, Derek Lam and many othert top designers have created flatforms this season. These Tory Burch flatform espadrilles above are just $165 at Bergdorf Goodman.

Rock a jumpsuit

Jumpsuits were popular in the latter half of the ’70s and they are back in style once again. For evening, rock a silky jumpsuit with a halter neckline. You can wear your jumpsuit with the aforementioned platform shoes and a stack of bangle bracelets. The Lisa Jayne Dann Pussy Bow Halter Jumpsuit pictured here is priced at $296 at ASOS.

For daytime, strapless rompers are all the rage for spring. Look for these pieces in breezy fabrics and fun prints. If you dare wear a romper, partner it with a chunky necklace and flat sandals for an effortless outfit that is comfy-chic.

Get into headbands

You can wear a headband in a variety of ways. Around the forehead is the most hippie-chic style, but the flower child look doesn’t work for everyone. If it makes you feel like you are in costume, don’t wear it.

Instead, wear a thick headband in a colorful retro print and tie it at the nape of your neck. You can order the disco funk headband pictured here from the mixbaby Etsy shop.

Wear big sunglasses

Oversized sunglasses with plastic frames were the hottest style during the ’70s. You don’t have to spend big bucks to find the perfect pair of classic 1970s-inspired shades. These Urban Outfitters sunglasses come in your choice of smoke or green colors are are priced at only $14 a pair.

Large aviator sunglasses with metal frames also offer a chic, throwback appeal. You can wear them with just about everything in your closet and they won’t go out of style anytime soon.
