At-home hair color formulas have improved exponentially over the past few years, making it a great option for women everywhere. Once you’ve mastered the art of at-home hair color, try these tips below to keep your color salon-fresh!
Seal the job with a clear gloss
Clear gloss treatments are great for all women. They add shine, condition and help to seal in color (tip- you can do this after a salon visit as well!)
Don’t wash your hair
Shampoo less frequently to prevent color fading. To keep your hair fresh, use a dry shampoo such as Tresemme Fresh Start Dry Shampoo.
If you must wash your hair… avoid hot water
In the shower, avoid using hot water on your hair. Instead use warm water and switch to cold during the final rinse to seal in the cuticle (brrr… we know that’s hard, but it’s also worth it!).
Use a color protecting shampoo and conditioner
Switch to products designed to protect and enhance color-treated hair. These products contain extra moisturizers and deposit a small amount of pigment during washing and conditioning — just enough to give your hair a color boost. For blonde hair, you can also banish brassiness with a purple-based formula. On the color scheme, purple is the opposite of yellow and the purple pigment neutralizes any yellow brassiness.
For blondes: One to try is Clairol Shimmer Lights Shampoo.
For red heads: Red heads can try a red toned shampoo such as Pantene Pro-V Red Expressions Shampoo Color Enhancing Auburn to Burgandy.
For brunettes: If you have brown hair, try John Frieda Brilliant Brunette Shine Release Daily Shampoo.
While you are at it… change your styling products too
Many normal formulas contain harsher ingredients that can strip your color. Switch to color-safe styling products to completely protect your work.

Use sunscreen
Yes, you need sunscreen for your hair as well. It’s best to wear a hat if you will be in the sun, otherwise try a color-extending hair sunscreen such as Redken Color Extend Sun Sparkling Shield Leave-In Smoother.
