Family camping spots in the Rocky Mountains you can’t miss

Are you a mountain or a beach person? After a fun-filled family vacation at one of these camping destinations in the Rockies — where the air is crisp, the hiking is gorgeous and the weather stays cooler in the summer — you might just change your mind.

Great Sand Dunes National Park

The Pinyon Flats Campground at Great Sand Dunes National Park is an amazing place to spend a week or two camping with your family. Located near Mosca, Colorado, the park features sand dunes up to 750 feet tall — the tallest in all of North America.

The area features 13,000-foot peaks, alpine lakes, ancient forests, tundra, lush wetlands and more. Kids love the Medano Creek for swimming and floating. Keep in mind that black bears frequent the area, so you’ll need to store all your food in the bear-proof boxes provided.
