When the weather changes, your skin’s needs change too. With cool, dry fall weather, you will need to change your makeup and skincare routine to keep your skin looking its very best.

Go heavy
The light moisturizer you used in the summer may not be heavy enough for cooler weather. Be sure your skin is getting enough moisture, nourishment and protection. Use moisturizer every day before applying makeup and use a thicker cream at night. When applying moisturizer, pay special attention to the areas around your eyes and mouth where wrinkles form first.
Don’t skip the sunscreen
Just because the sun is hiding behind the clouds doesn’t mean it can’t damage your skin. Always wear sunscreen, no matter what the weather, to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Get a 2-in-1 product like Sue Devitt Promarine tinted moisturizer. It provides SPF 30 sunscreen and sheer coverage all in one creamy, affordable product.
Fall makeup
If you are like most women, you probably wear less makeup in the summer compared to other times of year. When fall rolls around, create a sexy, alluring look by going a little bit heavier on the eyes and lips, while keeping cheeks relatively bare.
Skin
Smooth out your complexion with a foundation that matches your skin — don’t try to go darker just to keep your summer glow. Select a foundation that is formulated for your skin type.
Eyes
Start your makeup routine by applying a primer on your eyelids to keep your eyeshadow in place. Urban Decay Primer Potion is top-notch and it’s just $18 at Sephora.
When it comes to eyeshadow colors, many cosmetics companies feature gold and plum shades in their fall collections. Gray is hot in fall fashion and perfect for eyeshadow, too. Use a pale shimmery gray on your lids and accent the crease with a darker charcoal color. For evening, create a smoky eye easily with Too Faced Smoky Eye Palette, just $35.
Lips
Put away the sheer gloss that you used for summer and instead use a deeper shade of lipstick. Berry, burgundy and blue-reds are all perfect for fall. (Skip the orange-reds, which can make your teeth look yellow).
We love Givenchy Rouge Interdit Lipstick in Lune Carmin No. 52 (pictured here). This limited edition dark sensual red is part of their Je Veux La Lune Collection for Fall 2011.
Nails
When it comes to nail color, instead of trying to be matchy-matchy, play with shades that are much lighter yet complementary to your deep lip color. We love all the summery colors that are in OPI’s Pirates of the Caribbean collection — very wearable deep into autumn. Gray nail polish will also be hot for fall. We can’t get enough of Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colour in graphite (available July 2011).
