If you’re planning a summer vacation down South, you’ll find more than just outdoor fun, good food and Southern hospitality. Many destinations in the southern United States offer opportunities to learn about the culture and history of our country. Check out one of these cultural vacation destinations in the South.

San Antonio, Texas

People from all over the world head to San Antonio to visit the Alamo. This mission played a pivotal role in the Texas Revolution. The Alamo receives more than 2.5 million visitors per year, but it’s not the only cultural must-see attraction in San Antonio. The Tower of the Americas was originally built for the 1968 World’s Fair. This 750-foot tower is now a popular destination for families visiting the city. You can check out the view from the observation deck or have dinner with the family in the revolving restaurant at the top. Also, don’t miss one of the oldest operating churches in the country. San Antonio Cathedral was founded in 1731, and this amazing cathedral is visited by more than 5,000 people for mass every weekend. The architecture and history of the structure are unique and interesting. From the San Antonio River Walk to the city’s numerous museums and historic sites, the Alamo City has plenty do to and see during your cultural vacation to the South.

Phoenix, ARIZONA

If your travels are taking you to the Southwest United States, stop in Phoenix area. You’ll enjoy the luxury resorts, spectacular desert sunsets and various cultural activities and events. Start your visit at the Arizona Science Center, where kids can experience more than 300 hands-on exhibits and displays. The whole family will also love the museum’s planetarium and IMAX theater — and don’t forget to check out the world-famous Heard Museum. This museum offers 10 exhibition galleries, sculpture gardens, free guided tours, trading post shopping and numerous activities for children. While in the Phoenix area, you can also take a Hummer tour through the Sonoran desert. You’ll be able to check out Native American ruins, historic ghost towns and so much more.

Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta features a variety of cultural attractions for your family to enjoy. The city boasts numerous museums, historic theaters, art galleries, battlefield sites and other unique destinations. Located on 33 acres, the Atlanta History Center is one of the largest museums in the southeastern United States. It features two historic houses, six historic gardens, the Kenan Research Center and the Centennial Olympic Games Museum. When in Atlanta, you also can’t miss the Martin Luther King National Historic Site and The King Center. The King Center is the official living memorial dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Established by Coretta Scott King in 1968, The King Center is visited by one million people annually. The exhibits at The King Center chronicles Dr. King’s life, work, teachings and philosophy through a variety of diverse media and displays. While in Atlanta, your family will also enjoy the Georgia Aquarium, Fernbank Museum of Natural History, Stone Mountain Park and the World of Coca-Cola.
