6 Things you need to know before buying a bra

According to Susan Nethero, “The Bra Whisperer” and owner of {intimacy} bra stores in cities like Scottsdale and Atlanta, 85 percent of women are wearing the wrong bra size. Here, we share six things you need to know about finding the right fit before you go bra shopping:

Before you shop, keep these tips in mind

  1. Back bands provide 90 percent of support so the fit should be firm but comfortable.
  2. Your bra size can change at least six times in life from things like weight and hormonal changes. Get fitted yearly!
  3. What’s good for your friend isn’t always good for you! Everyone’s shape is different so try on several styles with a t-shirt to see how it looks when dressed.
  4. For ideal support, skip non-underwire cups and opt for underwire that rests comfortably against your rib cage with a soft cotton casing.
  5. Minimizing bras actually compress breast tissue and can result in loss of firmness. Stick with bras that lift and center the bust line. You’ll look taller and smaller-breasted!
  6. Cup sizes should be proportional to your body frame. Breasts should fill the cup completely without spilling over.

Finding bra-sized swimwear

When shopping for swimsuits, Nethero recommends that you look for:

  • Suits that flatter your figure and downplay the “trouble” areas. Choose from options like tummy control, adjustable leg-lines (for more or less coverage), bump-up pads for small breasts and more.
  • Bathing suit tops with underwire that helps to lift and separate the bust line.
  • Custom alterations to make the suit fit just right —  {intimacy} offers this free of charge to customers.
