Decorating with white-on-white is fresh, fun and full of color-matching possibilities. It’s a hot trend right now, just in time for summer. Depending on how it’s incorporated, a white-on-white look can conjure feelings of beachy boho chic or tailored sophistication. Whether you want interiors that make you want to kick off your sandals or curl up in a faux fur throw, white-on-white is a versatile trend that can fit the bill.
4 ways make white work in your living spaces
White is no longer synonymous with precious. Incorporating it into your interiors no longer means you’ll need to drape plastic covers and cordon off the room. The key is to choose natural fibers that are easy to clean and textured fabrics that can easily hide the wear and tear of everyday life. Don’t take “white” literally. Whites cover a very large color palette that includes ivory, cream, mother of pearl and more — just look at the white paint options at Benjamin Moore and you’ll get the idea. These shades of white all lend their own aesthetic so think about mixing textured fabrics in different tones and shades of whites for a layered, monochromatic look that can intrigue and hold your interest.
Couches and cabinets
Start with a muslin slipcover for your sofa. Then, add white pillows to brighten up the muslin, which is usually an off-white color. A textured cream throw finishes off the look, making it inviting and homey! If your aesthetic is more stark and minimalist, focus on the sheen and finish of fabrics and surfaces, rather than a more muted texture. Move the look from the living room into the kitchen and pair white cabinetry with white granite or concrete countertops.
Carrying white through every season
This trend can work year-round to give your home a fresh, clean look. Change out the materials for a seamless transition through the seasons: Linens and cottons infuse brightness and lightness during the summer months. Faux furs, wools and cut velvets add the depth and warmth you’ll crave when the temperature starts to drop. This change of texture for each season can easily be done with merely a change of pillows and throws!
Adding pops of color
As I mentioned before, white-on-white is versatile. Once you’ve created a textured monochromatic space, allow it to act as a backdrop to punch in colored pillows or throws as you wish. Since accessories are easy to change out, you can always go back to white-on-white when the time is right.
Flower arrangments
Finally, bring the look to life—literally—by incorporating vases of all-white flowers (my absolute favorite!) around your home. To add texture, group together several types of white flowers with different petal shapes into one big bouquet. Now you have a chic arrangement for any season!
