How to make a decorative mirror

Update a tired, old mirror to match your décor and your personality. Check out these simple tips for making a decorative mirror for your home.

Besides just painting, glass etching is a great way to personalize and update a mirror. Often, though, it is messy and can be completely unforgiving should you make a crafting mistake. This mirror project offers an easy alternative — use clear contact paper to emulate glass etching, minus the cost, mess and pressure. It can also be easily removed should you choose to transform your mirror again.

You will need these supplies to transform your mirror:

  • Large, vintage mirror with thick wood frame
  • 1 Spool natural fiber sisal (optional)
  • Fabric, felt for flower embellishment
  • Clear contact paper
  • Masking tape, newspaper
  • Ruler, craft knife
  • Paint, paintbrush, hot glue

Step one:

Clean and mask your mirror frame. Paint. Once completely dry, apply the sisal border using hot glue (if your frame has a bevel edge to accomplish this). Prepare your fabric flowers by rolling and twisting strips of fabric, coiling and gluing to a felt circle base using hot glue. Cut leaf shapes from coordinating felt.
