Off the catwalk: Fashion-inspired home styles

Love the latest designs and themes gracing the runway? Here are some tips to help you bring them into the living room.

The latest trends on the runway can easily find their way into your living room. The first thing to do is look at the latest fashion magazines and decide what you love enough to look at every day. There are some easy and fairly affordable things you can do that will give your living space an updated feel that’s easy to change when another theme graces the runway that you find yourself falling in love with.

Here are some of our favorite trends from the upcoming fall season and some suggestions on how to bring them into the home:

Velvet

This look from Oscar de la Renta’s Fall 2011 collection features velvet, with an overall lavishness. Some easy ways to bring that luxurious feeling into your living room is by pairing a cozy velvet throw with velvet pillows on your couch and chairs. The Tempo velvet 20-inch square pillow in shale ($40) follows the color scheme from the look but also comes in other colors if you’re looking more for the trend. Drape the throw over the side to give your couch that velvet look without being overwhelming. A fun way to pull velvet into the space is to hang a picture frame covered in velvet, or a mirror whose frame is covered in velvet, like this velvet flower mirror ($600) from NaturalHistoryShop on Etsy. To finish off the look get some faux fur pillows like this faux mink throw pillow ($50 for two) and some tarnished gold candle holders.

Plaid

Plaid is such a fun pattern, translates nicely into the home and is an easy look to recreate at home. Grab some plaid pillows of wool-like material for the feel of the Celine Fall 2011 collection — this yarn-dyed plaid throw pillow ($40) from Eddie Bauer is one of our favorites. The Winifred colorblock ottoman ($1,298) from Anthropologie is an awesome statement piece that will bring in plaid to your space and transform the look of your living room. You can use it to rest your feet or place a tray on it and use as a coffee table.

Red

Red is making a bold statement in fashion this fall, and it can make an even bolder statement in your living room. Red is a great color that you can have tons of fun with it. To go with the head-to-toe red look like this one from the Michael Kors Fall 2011 collection, start with a slipcover on your couch: This stretch Pearson sofa slipcover in crimson ($90) from Target is one of our favorites and pairs nicely with the BlissLiving Home Gemini pillow in red ($65). Finish off the look with a solid-red area rug like the round rose tufted rug ($400) from Pier 1. As a finishing touch, place your art and photos in some Lawrence Frames silver-plated metal with enamel frame ($25).

Clashing patterns

This might be the most daring of all the trends, but it can also be the easiest. Take your cue from this look in the Fall 2011 Proenza Schouler collection, and don’t worry if the stripes on the pillow you see at the store match the stripes on your couch — it’s actually better if they don’t! Have fun and buy some patterns you’ve had your eye on for a while; we’ve had our eye on the Treviso 20-inch pillow ($40) and the Tristan 18-inch pillow ($37). Throw these on your couch with the Westport rug ($88) under your coffee table. Top off the look with your favorite throw, candle holders and the Ziggy White vase ($15).

Vibrant blue

To keep those memories of the warm sunny beach during the brisk fall months, use this look from the Zac Posen Fall 2011 collection as inspiration. Blue is a calming color, so doing the whole room in blue won’t seem overwhelming. Start with a slipcover on your sofa like the Sure Fit cotton duck Bluestone T-cushion sofa slipcover ($55). Add an accent like the Princess Blue oblong pillows ($15) and swap out your table lamp for this Uttermost table lamp ($174). When the room is complete, you may forget it’s fall and feel like you’re napping on the sand again with the clear blue ocean nearby.
