Summer styles for trendy moms-to-be

Hot summer days can make looking stylish a major style challenge — never mind if you’re expecting. We asked NY-based stylist Kalyn Johnson what her foolproof, fave summer styles are for looking trendy in the heat.

Summer is not over — yet. And if the temperatures are soaring toward the 100-mark, who wants to care about fashion — especially if you’re expecting. Wrong. Kalyn Johnson, a NY-based stylist says it’s all about simplicity and chic, easy pieces during these sweltering months. “Staying cool and being stylish during the summer months can be a challenge, especially if you’ve got a bambino on the way. Think chic, flowing dresses, comfortable cottons and a great pair of shoes to ensure that you look and stay cool.” Here are her middle five go-to fashion items for staying chic (and cool) in the heat.

Maxi dress

“They are the most comfortable items I own,” Johnson admits. “They’re perfect for lunch with the girls or dinner with the hubby and they look good on all shapes.” The best part? Even if you don’t own a maxi dress, many of these long, flowy dresses are currently on sale, such as the Calypso St. Barth for Target, now $27.99 down from $39.99.

A man’s white dress shirt or chambray shirt

Why is it chic? It’s a classic. “Channel your inner Lauren Hutton — wear it over a tank with jeans and great jewelry or wear it as a beach cover up. It can even replace your sweater from time to time if the mood hits you,” the stylist says. “The possibilities are endless!”

Skinny jeans

Don’t be nervous. This stylist says they are the “greatest thing since sliced bread.” Why? “They help lengthen your proportions and look great with everything from a tank to a sequin tunic. The Gap, JBrand and Liz Lange all have a great selection of maternity skinnies,” Johnson notes.

Open cardigan

“This year it’s all about the open cardigan — it can be worn a bunch of different ways and can help to dress up even a simple T-shirt and jeans,” she says. “Plus, it is always good to have a sweater or shawl for the times when the A/C becomes too much.”

Indian-inspired bejeweled sandals

They add instant glam to any look and are “perfect for lounging by the pool or for nights when your feet are too tired for heels,” Johnson notes.
