With summer more than half over (sniff), we can’t help but think about fall styles and what we’ll be wearing once the temperature drops. The fashion picks that always remind us of fall and heading back to class are all things preppy – a look that’s currently making its way back into the style spotlight. With that in mind, we thought we’d share some of the pretty, preppy pieces we’re currently coveting.

Striped crewneck
Striped sweaters seem to scream preppy and we love this airy cotton crewneck style (J. Crew, $78) in cream and champagne honey stripes – a warm golden yellow. Casual, while at the same time offering a polished piece to pair with your khakis or cropped colored denim, we love the ease of this comfortable and versatile layer. Throw a blazer on top for an even more pulled together – and preppy look.
Penny loafers
Nothing says preppy quite like a pair of penny loafers, but why opt for something plain and traditional when you can wear something that really gets noticed? We were immediately intrigued by these glossed platform penny loafers (Anthropologie, $160) in an eye-popping shade of turquoise. They also come in dark forest green, but we’re partial to the bright blue – the perfect way to spice up a little black dress or charcoal pencil skirt.
Roller skinny jeans
While there’s nothing inherently preppy about denim (unless of course it’s creased and pleated), there are certain styles of colored denim – like this red, cuffed Current/Elliot pair (Shopbop.com, $187) – that we feel have some serious prep-potential. The slouchy, skinny jeans in a washed-out shade of red would look great paired with deck shoes and a preppy oxford shirt with the sleeves rolled up.
Polo shirt
Another iconic preppy item is the polo shirt, which is not only comfortable, but totally versatile. We love the simplicity – and low price point – of this cute cotton style (Old Navy, $15), that comes in a rainbow of cheerful hues including lavender, red, green, blue and plum. Pair yours with anything from skinny jeans and a boyfriend blazer to rolled khakis and a slouchy sweater.
Pleated skirt
There’s something about pleats that will always epitomize preppy and we love this cute Juicy Couture mini skirt with lots of pretty pleats (Juicycouture.com, $70). The fun and flirty look is perfect for days you want to throw caution to the wind and wear something youthful and fresh. Pair with a tank top and fitted sweater or add chunky knit tights and a crewneck cardigan once the temperature drops.
Structured blazer
This black blazer with cream trim and oh-so-cute mini pockets takes the cake where preppy is concerned (Shopruche.com, $47). We love the classic cut and structured look of this polished piece, perfect for elevating everyday jeans and a T-shirt or adding to a pencil skirt and pumps. While not all blazers are preppy, this eye-catching cotton style definitely fits the bill.
