The goal
Last night on Home by Novogratz, Paul Pierce took his Truth on Health initiative back to the birthplace of his basketball dreams – his high school gymnasium. Since his initiative strives to help kids get healthy through proper eating and exercise, a gym overhaul was just the trick to get these inner-city kids inspired for healthy living.
As parents of seven children, Bob and Cortney seemed the logical design choice to head up this kid-focused renovation — working with kids is something close to both Pierce’s and the Novogratzes’ hearts. The overall goal was to make the kids feel appreciated, while creating a sense of community. In addition, they hoped the space would encourage students to develop positive values like truth and respect.
Bob and Cortney wanted to infuse a ’60s vibe into the lackluster gym by utilizing cool hues and retro lighting. Take a look to see if you think they successfully completed Pierce’s mission.
Go big or go home
Oversize images fill the walls and add impressive drama to what was just blank canvas. A substantial, pastel-colored light feature dangles as a focal point in the center of the ceiling.
Lounging areas
One goal of the project was to create a sense of community by establishing a gathering place. The main lounge area serves this purpose well — a black sectional and colorful throw pillows look like they belong in a designer living room rather than a high school gym.
A multipurpose room
Bob and Cortney shaped multiple living spaces in the once cavernous gym – a designated workout zone, a comfortable place to hit the books and a spot to kick up your heels – successfully establishing different zones for every player’s need.
Paul pierce personal touches
Bob and Cortney made sure to leave Pierce-inspired touches throughout the space. They customized a “Rock Chalk Jayhawk” stencil on a door, framed a “34” Celtics jersey on a wall and placed a “P” throw pillow in the lounge area — for years to come, students will be reminded of the gift Pierce created for them.
