5 Fall eye shadow trends

Fall is always a great transitional time for makeup, and 2011 is all about the eyes. Bring the drama or just add some natural light that will brighten, lift and make your eyes look full of life. Here are five fall eye shadow trends we spotted on the runways and beyond.

Taste the muted rainbow

In spring 2011, designer Jason Wu showcased a series of super bright eye shadow colors that made the lids of his runway models really pop. Since everything is a little more relaxed during fall, try muting those bright colors. Instead of bright blue, opt for a baby-blue pastel or a smoky blue-gray. Rather than bright purple, mute out blues and greens with a soft, pale lavender. Play around with color and see which colors work best for you.

Shimmer and shine

Shimmer brings light and life into tired eyes, and 2011 is all about subtle shine. Don’t go to the brightest shade in your makeup bag. Get inspired by the changing leaves and scenery around you. Brown and bronze shimmery eye shadow looks incredible this time of year, and looks gorgeous with a splash of burgundy on the cheeks and lips.

Smoky subtlety

Smoky eyes are the go-to standard as the weather gets cooler, but leave the dark black tones for those dreary winter days. You can pull off a smoky look without ever going to the dark side of your makeup bag. Instead, try creating a look with soft and dark brown shades. Accentuate the crease with the dark shade and blend each color into the skin for a smoky, subtle look.

GrAy up your greens

Green, brown and bronze will always be fall’s predictable eye shadow colors, but 2011’s greens bring the drama. Blend gray with green, brown and black — these shades draw attention to the eye without going overboard. Plus, they can be incorporated into just about every outfit or event!

Silver stunner

Whether you opt for a straight-up silvery shade or choose a color with silver undertones, those gray metallics from seasons past are back again. Depending on your outfit, mix with blue, green or purple shades for an easy designer look. Make sure your shadow doesn’t rub off during the day, leaving a sparkly, greasy mess behind. Try patting powder or an eye shadow base on the lid to absorb oil and give you that perfect, lasting metallic look.
