Fish pedicure
While we love sea creatures of all kinds, we don’t necessarily want them nibbling on our feet. But that’s exactly what happens with this weird and controversial beauty treatment that involves live fish eating the dead skin off your feet. Popular around the world, this frightening foot soak uses Garra rufa, a tiny toothless fish, as an unconventional exfoliation method. While countless people all over the world swear by this sole softening treatment, we can’t imagine soaking our feet in a tank full of hungry fish — toothless or otherwise.
Snake venom facial
Scared of snakes? This might not be the treatment for you. At the Sonya Dakar Spa in Beverly Hills, clients can sign up for this bizarre-sounding facial that supposedly has a botox-like effect on the face. The main ingredient in the wrinkle-busting treatment is called SYN-AKE, a synthetic version of snake venom that mimics the paralyzing effects of a temple viper’s venom. This scary-sounding ingredient smoothes the skin and prevents further development of fine lines and wrinkles. Gwyneth Paltrow and Danni and Kyle Minogue are said to be fans of this frightening facial.
Leech therapy
We shuddered when we learned about this treatment, also known as hirudotherapy, that goes back thousands of years. Even though it’s been around for quite some time, leech therapy crept into the spotlight a few years ago when Demi Moore mentioned giving it a try. While she was in Austria doing a cleanse, part of Moore’s treatment package involved leech therapy — letting the creepy critters suck your blood as a way to detox. Moore said the process left her feeling younger and more revitalized, and even though we’re all for a more youthful appearance and increased energy, there’s no way any leeches are getting near us any time soon!
Bee venom mask
When we think of bees, we usually picture the black and yellow buzzers flying around the backyard. We stay away from them and hope that they stay away from us, but Deborah Mitchell’s Bee Venom Mask gives new meaning to the term “buzz-worthy” and makes us think of bees in a whole new light. This anti-aging mask is another treatment known to have a face-freezing botox-like effect. Containing manuka honey, renowned for its soothing and healing properties, the treatment also contains ingredients found in bee venom that work to control the facial muscles for an immediate lifting, tightening and firming effect. Stars including Victoria Beckham and Michelle Pfeiffer are said to be fans of this stinging skin treatment.
