Winter sweater trends to cozy up in

Sweaters are a winter mainstay, but not every sweater is created equal. Like anything else in fashion (from boots to denim to bathing suits), styles change on a regular basis and sweaters are no exception. Find out which looks to lust after as the temperature drops with our picks for the top five winter sweater trends.

Stripes

We love stripes. We can’t help it. They’re fun, they’re fashionable and they seem to take even the most average sweater from good to great with ease. This winter, stay on-trend and warm with stylish stripes. We love this chic Aubin & Wills open-knit sweater in blue and white nautical stripes (net-a-porter.com, $150). Pair this wool and mohair blend piece with brightly-hued skinny denim and your favorite boots for an easy-wearing winter outfit.

Fair Isle print

This iconic print reminds us of sipping hot cocoa around the fire while snow swirls outside – in other words, it’s perfect for winter and back in a big way this season. Seen on everything from tees to leggings, we think it looks best on sweaters. Case in point: this soft black and gray sweater tunic in on-trend Fair Isle print (Nordstrom, $88). Pair yours with chunky knit tights and lace-up boots to stay warm and snug in style.

Lace

While you may not associate lace with knitwear, it’s shaping up to be a hot trend for winter – with good reason. Elegant and cozy at the same time, lace offers added interest to an otherwise run-of-the-mill sweater. We’ve been coveting this ultra-soft dolman sweater inset with vintage-inspired lace (Anthropologie, $198). The pretty orangey-pink hue and slouchy cut of this sweater make it a comfortably chic addition to your cold weather wardrobe.

Crewneck

While crewneck sweaters never truly go out of style, there seems to be somewhat of a style resurgence this winter. As the temperature drops, invest in a few of these classic pieces to pair with everything from denim to pencil skirts. Stay simple but with a punch of bold color in this fitted crewneck sweater in a rich shade of purple (Old Navy, $20).

Cowl neck

Universally flattering, cowl neck sweaters are a stylish choice for staying cozy through the colder months. Where turtlenecks can sometimes feel constricting (especially as the dry heat blasts indoors), cowl necks are looser and much more comfortable. We’re partial to this Michael Kors style with a cleverly removable cowl neck for days when you want to go simpler (Neiman Marcus, $100). Choose from bright crimson (our pick), black or caramel.
