How to look chic at your kids’ sporting events

One of the perks of having a baby is being able to carry a stylish diaper bag. But what happens when your precious bundle of love starts growing up and playing sports or dance and other activities? How do you carry everything they need (and you need) without feeling like a “bag” lady? Moms might feel a little silly still carrying a diaper bag (even though it is probably a great option!) and everyday backpacks can make you feel like a student or look plain boring. Here are some ideas to stay chic at your kids’ soccer game (or t-ball or ballet or you name it!).

Look for fashionable backpacks

Backpacks are probably the best option for moms. Being able to wear them on your back keeps your hands free, so you are able to tend to your children with ease. Look for a backpack that has multiple sections: a place for your necessities and a place for your kids’ gear and snacks. It should also have two side pockets for drinks, so they are always handy. The key to feeling chic is to find designs in fun colors (think hot pink, silver or gold) or fabrics (neoprene, leather or sequins). One to try is Juicy Couture’s Eleanor Neoprene Backpack (JuicyCouture.com, $228).

Design your own

If you can’t find the perfect backpack, design your own! Buy an inexpensive plain black backpack and bedazzle with Swarovski crystals or rhinestone iron on transfers. Look for embellishments at your local craft store or specialty websites, such as this DIVA iron on transfer from Thread Art ($4).

Try a bucket bag

Bucket bags are another great option as a carry all. Not only are they roomy, but they usually have side pockets that are perfect for water bottles or cell phones. Try a leather or a faux leather bucket tote that can cross over from sports hour to happy hour. One to try is Boston Proper’s Everyday Bucket Tote ($119).

Watch the sneakers

Yes, being on the field can often be wet or muddy and regular sneakers are usually the go-to option. However, to pizazz up your look, try a pair of “designer” sneakers — even better if they have a wedge heel to make your legs look slimmer. Try DKNY Active Wedge Sneaker (shoes.com, $85).
