How to apply fake eyelashes

Have a big event coming up, or just want to add some extra drama to your everyday look? Fake eyelashes are a great way to accent your peepers, and believe it or not, brain science is not actually required to learn how to apply them. We enlisted the help of Victoria Collotta, Spa Director at Jaie3 Spa and Salon in the greater Boston area, to show us the easiest, breeziest way to get long lasting, glamour girl falsies.

Step 1: Prep

Because eyelashes can be purchased in strips or individual pieces, your first order of business is to decide what type of lashes you want, says Victoria of Jaie 3 Spa and Salon. “Individuals are recommended if you’re seeking a more natural look, but strips can be cut into smaller pieces and applied individually as well.” Once you’ve picked out your falsies, it’s time to prep your real eyelashes for application. “Use an eyelash curler and apply a clear mascara or eyelash conditioner to help lengthen them. If the fake lashes you bought are too long, trim them so that each individual eyelash is a different length,” recommends Victoria. This will give you a more natural look. Reserve your longest lashes for the outer corners of the eyes.

Step 2: Use some glue

Squeeze a small amount of glue (typically sold with eyelashes) onto the back of your hand, says Victoria. “Using a pair of tweezers, pull an eyelash from the container and dip the base of the lash into the adhesive with a long stroke.” Wait several seconds before applying so that the glue has enough time to become tacky. This will prevent your fake lashes from sliding around too much.

Step 3: Apply your lashes

Starting at the outer edge of your eye, look down and apply your faux lash so that it attaches to the base of your real lash. “Take care not to apply the lash to your skin,” warns Victoria. Repeat this application, working your way in, until both eyes are finished. For a more realistic look, apply lashes only to the outer corners of each eye (not the inside).

Step 4: Let them dry

Wait at least 15 minutes for the lash glue to dry before applying any eye makeup (including mascara), advises Victoria. “To remove them, gently rub lashes with a creamy cleanser or eye makeup remover.” It’s not recommended to wear fake eyelashes while sleeping, says Victoria.
