Spring is fast approaching, so it’s time to think about how your home will reflect the spirit of the season. To transition your home out of its winter decor and into styles that feel fresh and energetic, check out the following trends. According to interior designers across the nation, these are some of the most popular looks for 2012’s spring season.
Tangerine, neons, muted colors and metallics
Wondering which colors will be “in” this spring? According to Sabina Vavra, an interior designer and TV personality, “Tangerine is the ‘it’ color this spring.” She suggests mixing it with lighter variations of the shade and a hint of red to achieve a “classic color blocking for a dramatic and energetic interpretation of the season’s color.” She also recommends mixing it with crisp linen white and pale lilac “for a vivacious and spirited twist on the hue, or combine it with beige for a subtle spin on the spicy color.”
Lauren Flanagan of About.com Guide to Interior Decorating adds some additional tips for decorating with tangerine. “This fiery shade is extra-cheerful when paired with happy-go-lucky mates like turquoise, citrus green, mustard and even purple. For more subdued tastes it pairs beautifully with a variety of grays.”
In addition to the popularity of these color combinations, Flanagan says, “Neon colors have been spotted on the fashion runways and that’s a surefire sign they’ll be making their way into home decor soon.”
Interior designer Estee Stanley touts muted colors such as pale pinks, light grays and muted blues, saying that Farrow and Balls’ Parma gray is one of her favorite muted blues for the spring season.
Designer Frances Herrera says, “Mixing metallics such as textured silvers and gold is a fabulous trend this spring season.” To get the look, she suggests using decorative items like trays, vases, bowls, mirrors and table lamps.
Nature
When transitioning a space from winter to spring, Herrera draws inspiration from Mother Nature. “I love putting away the decorative pine cones in place of sea shells, driftwood, feathers and quince or cherry-blossom branches,” she explains. “I also encourage my clients to rotate their photos as a new season approaches. Swap out your pictures to those that represent the current season, like photos of a beach, garden and beautiful nature scenes.”
Green decor
According to Olga Adler, a designer and Mythic Paint color expert, “Green decor is still on the rise. Recycled, repurposed and natural products will be huge; also products that are healthy for the family and home, like VOC-free and non-toxic Mythic paint.”
Floral motifs
“One hot overall trend for spring is bringing nature’s whimsical feel and vibrant colors indoors,” says Aimee Beatty, Pier 1 Imports’ in-house stylist. She further explains that “floral motifs capture an organic beauty that can transform a home just by the simple act of bringing the outdoors in. That way, even if spring showers set in, you can still enjoy a beautiful day in your own home.”
Mixing and matching
Stanley says she’s noticed that designers and homeowners are transitioning away from minimalist decor and moving toward a cozier-looking home filled with accessories. “I think more people are not so concerned with perfection anymore. People are looking more toward mixing colors, materials and fabrics instead of sticking to one theme,” she explains.
