How moms can lengthen the time between salon visits

Moms are busy ladies and often, going to the salon gets put off, especially for those who color their hair.

While doing our own cut and color at home is a possibility, many times moms would rather have it done for them. Here are some tips to stretch the time between your salon visits — without looking striped, dry and split!

Keep your color close (to natural that is)

Choose a color that is two to three shades from your own hair color. Your roots won’t be as noticeable as they grow out. You can also ask your colorist to choose a temporary hair color that will gradually fade out. Again, your roots will be less obvious and you won’t have to answer the questions from your children, “Mommy, why does your hair look funny?”

Use a magic wand

If you do notice roots, keep a temporary root touch up product on hand. Some formulas come with mascara type applicators. One product, ColorMark ($22), is an actual liquid hair color that comes with a soft-tip applicator and comes in 10 shades. In any case, these products can be a lifesaver so you don’t find yourself looking through your children’s markers for a matching color!

Remember that less is more…

Wash your hair less often to prevent color fading and use a shampoo formulated with ingredients that won’t strip hair. One to try is L’Oreal EverPure Sulfate-Free Color Care Shampoo and Conditioner ($7).

If you use a dry shampoo, try a dry conditioner

Moms have learned the benefits of dry shampoo, but how do you keep your hair from “drying out?” The answer is to try one of the new dry conditioners. Suave’s Dry Conditioner Spray ($3) is formulated with shea butter and sunflower seed extract to maintain shine and moisture without having to wash your hair.

Repair without scissors

If the thought of cutting your own split ends scares you (and you don’t want to give your children any ideas about cutting their own hair!), try one of the new products formulated to repair — or appear to repair — split ends. These products usually work by temporarily binding split ends, allowing you to go longer between haircuts. One to try is TRESemme Split Remedy Sealing Serum ($5).
