Visiting the salon is invigorating. You walk in with tired tresses, jagged nails or dull skin and you emerge feeling like a new woman — great highlights, a pretty manicure or a radiant face. For busy moms, a few hours at the salon also means you get time to recharge. However, having your hair and nails beautified or getting that much needed facial is easier said than done when you have kids. Enter Bloom Studios, a new concept spa and salon in Gilbert, Arizona.
For busy mamas on the go, nothing is more relaxing than an hour or two in some sort of salon chair, whether it belongs to the hair stylist, the manicurist or the aesthetician. Even better if you can also sneak in a yoga or Pilates class, right? If one of the issues holding you back from beauty and mental well-being is the lack of a sitter, there’s a solution!
Blooming happiness
Bloom Studios is a gorgeous 24,000 square foot facility co-owned and created by brother and sister duo Shannon and Kyle Johnson. But what makes this salon so different than any other in town? Aside from offering a full array of beautification services, they also boast wellness services designed to relax even the most stressed of moms, including massage, acupuncture, personal training, hypnotherapy and life coaching.
If group classes are more your style, Bloom offers a wide array of mind and body classes such as tai chi, Pilates, yoga and Bollywood. With membership prices starting at $29, you could spend less than you do on your average gym membership. Of course, non-members are just as welcome.
The Kid’s Bloom Room
Dreams of going to the day spa — or even running in for a quick manicure — are often dashed because finding a sitter is often easier said than done. But not at Bloom! Part of their revolutionary spa concept is the Kid’s Bloom Room drop-in childcare, where children from six months to 12 years can come play and be entertained by caring adults allowing mom the time to relax without having to worry about what the kids are up to.
“No more waiting until your husband or your babysitter is available,” says co-owner Kyle Johnson. “You don’t even need an appointment to check your kids into the Bloom Room. It could just be to give you some peace and quiet while you visit with friends or work in the free Wi-Fi lounge. It’s a dream playdate destination!”
The bucket list
The story behind the salon is just as important to tell. In 2010, Kyle and Shannon’s father was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma, a life threatening form of skin cancer, and was given six months or less to live. Faced with his own mortality, their father looked to his tremendous faith and found peace.
Opting not to spend his remaining time on earth fighting the disease in the hospital, he created a bucket list of activities he wanted to share with his two children to give them as many great memories as possible. The next few months were filled with tattoos, dinner parties, a cruise to the Bahamas, going through old photos together and yes, even sky diving.
Sadly, their father lost his battle with melanoma on New Year’s Day of 2010, just three months after he was diagnosed. Using what their father had left them financially, Kyle and Shannon decided to go for it and got Bloom Studios off the ground.
Salon services with love
In their father’s honor, they have created a non-profit organization called The Richard T. Johnson Legacy Empowerment Project for Melanoma. Ten percent of their total net profit and 10 percent of all of their membership revenue will go to help finance research, as well as to help fund the bucket lists of other metastatic melanoma patients, so they can create forever memories, the same way Kyle and Shannon’s father did for them.
