Enjoy these looks inspired by the ’20s, ’50s and ’70s — they will have you wanting to raid your local thrift shop for some retro styles.
Styles seem to be recycled every couple of decades and, this year, the ’70s, the ’50s and ’20s are the hottest retro styles. Here are some of our favorite retro looks to wear this summer!
Wide leg trouser pants
The wide leg trouser pants are a more refined ’70s flare. While they do not have that extreme bell bottom look, they still pair nicely with platforms and wedges. With the platforms and wedges, they elongate the leg, making you look taller and thinner. The 1969 modern trouser jean (above) from GAP ($70) looks great when paired with a loosely fitted blouse or tank, as well as with a tucked-in, form-fitted tank or tee. Add a nice long pendant to balance the look and you have successfully pulled off a modern day Saturday Night Fever!
Platforms
Platforms are likely what comes to mind when you think about the ’70s, but the platforms out this season are a much updated look with all the feeling of the ones from decades ago. So while you don’t want to look like a character from Austin Powers, you do want to wear a pair that pays homage to the original platforms. These look great with the wide leg trousers and mini dresses. Here are some of our favorites from Steve Madden: Whereto ($100) and Getout ($130). The Getout sandal (above) would also look great with a maxi skirt.
Oversized hats
The oversized hats paired with some big sunglasses will have you instantly looking like a celebrity, just notice how many people stop to look at you as you walk around with your hat on! These are a great trend from the ’70s that we are happy to see come back again. They hide a bad hair day, protect your face from the sun and make you look just plain hot! These hats are extremely versatile and can be worn sitting on the beach, walking down the boardwalk with a maxi or with some skinny jeans and a blouse. Here are a couple of out favorite oversized hats with the floppy brim: J. Crew Two Tone Straw Hat for $38 (above) and Jessica Simpson Ombre Oversized Floppy from Zappos for $42.
Flapper dresses
There is nothing sexier than the flapper dresses of the roaring ’20s. Who wouldn’t want to feel like one of the glamorous partygoers in The Great Gatsby? So while in the past you may have gotten one too many vintage photos taken on vacation to indulge the flapper dress look, you can now relish in the fact that they have come back into style. The modern day flapper dresses are slightly different and use more lace and less fringe, but that sexy quality is still there. Check out this Short Sleeved Flapper Dress from Free People ($128). Pair with a gem encrusted headband and a pair of sandals for date night.
Polka dots
Think Grease — love the outfits Sandy wore before she embraced her inner bad girl? Well, then you will be happy to hear that polka dots have made a comeback. This ’50s style is back and is just as chic and classy as ever! The bigger polka dots look best on a dress like this Big Shot Dot Dress ($158) from J. Crew, while blouses look better with the smaller dots like this Naomi Top in Polka Dots ($110) also from J. Crew (above).
