Add some rustic and vintage charm to your favorite room or porch with this cute DIY shutter garden. The more rustic and shabby the shutter, the better! If you’re a DIY novice and don’t want to paint your own window shutter, buy one that has already been painted and chipped on Etsy, where they range from $15 to $50. To save some pennies, go to a resale shop or yard sale and pick up a used shutter there.
What you’ll need:
- Vintage/rustic window shutter
- Ribbon or baker’s twine
- Festive wreath (you can buy one here)
- Hot glue gun
- Pint-sized Mason jars
- Soil
- Flowers, plants or herbs
Step 1: Arrange Mason jars on the shutter
Place the Mason jars on the shutter where you would like them to be. We staggered ours on the edged rims of the shutter.
Tie ribbon or twine around the lid of the jars and make a bow.
Step 2: Glue Mason jars to shutter and let dry
Using your hot glue gun and super glue (so the jars stay put), carefully dab a bit of glue to the back of each jar and hold in place on the shutter.
Once you’ve glued the jars, glue your decorative wreath to the top of the shutter.
Step 3: Fill jars with soil and plant herbs/flowers
Once the jars have set on the shutters (at least one hour), fill each jar about one-third of the way full with planting soil.
Once the soil is in each Mason jar, plant your flowers or herbs.
Step 4: Hang and display!
Once your jars have been filled with soil and plants, hang the shutter in your house, on your porch or wherever you’d like!
