Hi, it’s Ashley from Simply Designing, and I am so excited to show you a few fun, fabulous and simple Halloween decor ideas! I can’t believe that Halloween is right around the corner.
Because Halloween is one of our favorite holidays at our home, we love decorating for it. If you’ve visited my blog, you know that I like to keep things simple, so here are a few simple-to-create and super-cute decorating ideas for Halloween.
First up is a very special, exclusive Halloween tutorial just for SheKnows! I created a really fun and simple craft that just makes me smile every time I look at it. Plus, it involves candy!
While there are a few steps involved with this craft, I promise that it is actually quite simple to complete.
Wickedly Witchy Candy Jar
You will need:
- 1 glass jar with lid
- 1 candlestick holder (mine is from the dollar store)
- 1 plastic foam cone
- 2 sheets of black felt
- sparkly ribbon or other hat decorations (I used a sparkly purple ribbon)
- tulle (I used sparkly purple tulle that came on a 6-inch-wide roll)
- 1 hair elastic (an old ponytail holder works great for this)
- 6 inches (approximately) of heavy gauge wire
- black spray paint
- E6000 glue (or similar)
- hot glue gun (low temp preferred — high temp glue guns can melt plastic foam)
- scissors
- candy to fill jar (optional — you could fill with tissue paper or any type of filler)
- black vinyl or scrapbook letter stickers (optional)
Directions:
Step 1. Glue cone to lid
Using E6000 glue (or similar), glue the plastic foam cone to the top of the jar lid. Let it set completely. Then spray-paint the sides and top of the glass jar lid with black spray paint. Let it dry.
Step 2. Spray-paint candlestick
Turn your candlestick upside down and, in a well ventilated area or outside, spray-paint the candlestick holder black. Let it dry.
Step 3. Glue candlestick to jar
Using E6000 glue, glue the top of the candlestick holder to the bottom of the glass jar. Let it set until completely dry.
Step 4. Stick wire into cone
Stick the wire into the top of the plastic foam cone using a bit of hot glue to secure.
Step 5. Make witch’s hat
Using scissors and your glue gun, attach one sheet of black felt around the plastic foam cone. Cut and glue it into a hat or cone shape so the top point of the hat meets the top of the wire. Use hot glue to secure the felt in place. Then you can bend the top of the hat — or leave it pointy if you like!
Step 6. Decorate hat
Attach any ribbon or decor to the top of the hat.
Step 7. Create brim of hat
Using a mixing bowl as a guide, cut a large circle out of the second piece of felt. Cut a smaller hole in the middle and slide over the top of the witch’s hat. This will be your brim. (Hint: Cut a small hole to start with. You can always make the hole bigger, and you want the hat to fit tightly around the bottom of the cone. That will give your hat a little “wave” to it.)
Step 8. Add letters to jar
Cut your letters out of vinyl or use scrapbook letter stickers to decorate your glass jar. I put “Toil and Trouble” on my jar (because I love Shakespeare). But you can also use any Halloween shape, a witch’s face or another spooky phrase on your jar. Feel free to personalize it.
Step 9. Create tulle tutu
Next, cut approximately 16 to 18 pieces of tulle about 5 inches long. Pinch the middle in, fold the tulle in half and place it behind your hair elastic. You will want to loop the two loose ends through the loop at the top of the tulle. This will secure your tulle around the elastic and be the start of a cute little tulle tutu for your witch!
10. Add tulle
Continue adding tulle to your hair elastic in this manner until it is as full as you desire.
Step 11. Secure tulle tutu to jar
Use hot glue to secure the tulle tutu to the bottom of the glass jar.
Fill the glass jar with your favorite Halloween candy (or other filler) and enjoy your little witch candy jar! Isn’t she a cute, fun and sparkly addition to this year’s Halloween decorations?
