It’s kind of an understatement to say that I’m a bit obsessed with Kate Spade. In my book, the brand really can do no wrong, so it’s no surprise that I’m drooling over their new spring/summer 2013 line. One of my fave parts? The nail looks at their Fashion Week presentation!
And who created these amazingly quirky and cool nails? None other than the lovely and incredible Deborah Lippmann. Seriously, how adorable are these nails?
To complement the heavily gingham collection, Lippmann created a nice balance of nail art and accents of white, and models sported an ever so fashionable variation on a stiletto nail. So what shades were used to create this fun look?
The look started with a clean base, and Lippmann relied on two coats of Amazing Grace, an opaque pure white lacquer with a high-shine finish. To create the chic assortment of gingham patterns, Lippmann used striping brushes to paint lines for the pattern after drying the base coat.
Now onto color cues: The flirty I Kissed a Girl, a demi-matte pink, helped create a pink gingham; My Prerogative helped create a cute royal blue gingham; Sunny yellow nails came from It Girl and Lara’s Theme helped create the fun orange look. Oh and what about that gorgeous mint green one? It came from a custom shade Deborah created for the show using a combo of existing shades — Amazing Grace, On the Beach and Yellow Brick Road.
If last year’s nail trends are any indication, this lively gingham look could very well make its way onto your nails next year, Lippmann says: “Last season, we saw a trend come to life with the polka dot nail, and I think that we’re going to see the same with gingham this season.”
Want to recreate the look at home? Try this tip from Lippmann: Cut very thin strips of Scotch tape to create a stencil. Next, lay it on your nail to create the pattern, then paint the nail. Finally, remove your tape and reveal the pattern! One extra suggestion? Always make sure your base color is completely dry before creating the complex look.
