So what makes a modern mom? For many, the definition is simple: a mom who isn’t just a mom, but a woman, business professional and entrepreneur. With so much to juggle, you can’t be expected to clean your house in pearls and high heels like your great grandma. Keeping house in the modern world requires a different set of rules.
A modern mom needs modern ways to keep her home clean so she isn’t left scrubbing floors or washing dishes well past midnight. If you are a busy mom with things to do (or want to enjoy time with your family), check out these tips on how to clean and organize your home!
Ask for help
The modern mom is never afraid to ask for help, so don’t think you need (and have) to do it all yourself! Hiring a pro cleaner or maid every few months will likely not break the budget, so hire someone to help with the harder-to-clean areas (the stove, bathrooms, corners and basements). In addition, enlist your husband, family and friends to help with spring cleaning and home renovation projects, like building shelves or painting rooms.
Clean quicker
You most likely don’t have hours to spend cleaning, and even if you did, why would you want to? The key to cleaning your home in a shorter amount of time is to spend a few minutes cleaning daily! After you eat, immediately wipe down dishes and load them into the dishwasher (five minutes). Wipe down the bathroom sinks and toilets every few days (two minutes). Make your bed every morning (five minutes) and require your kids to do the same. Immediately toss dirty clothes into the hamper (30 seconds). These quick tasks can shave hours off household cleaning time!
Go green, and read labels
A modern mom knows the environment matters (and cares about what is in her cleaning supplies). No more harsh chemicals and bleaches. Stick with all-natural brands of cleaners like Method, Seventh Generation or Ecover to limit the toxins to the environment and the harsh effect on your skin! Reading labels is important (in both food preparation and cleaning) but is especially important if you’re pregnant, as some cleaners could be harmful for the baby.
Multi-task
Don’t have 10 seconds to spare lately, but can’t stand a messy home? Multi-task! Clean the inside of the shower while you shower by wiping down tile with non-harmful shower cleaner. This may sound obvious, but use multipurpose cleaners, such as Lysol, which can be used on all surfaces. Clean your refrigerator and stock it with new groceries at the same time. By killing two birds with one stone, you get twice as much done in the same amount of time.
Know when to call it quits
No one is perfect, and a successful modern mom knows when to call it quits. Those stains just will not come out of your husband’s white shirt? Instead of spending hours scrubbing, call it quits for the night and try again tomorrow. After a long day of work, cleaning and making dinner, leave the dishes for your husband or to deal with in the morning. Sometimes, you just need to give up to spend more time with your family.
