Sonoma
Although wine tasting is fun any time of the year, the temperate climate of the Sonoma Valley makes for a perfect fall visit. Before indulging in the wine, take your sweetheart up in the air! Is there anything more romantic than a hot air balloon ride? You’ll see the valley from a whole new perspective. After the balloon ride, head back to town for a well-deserved glass of wine. Sonoma Square, the city’s quaint and picturesque downtown, is lined with tasting rooms and restaurants. Book a room at a hotel overlooking the square, and you won’t have to drive anywhere! But you won’t want to miss the sprawling vineyards and wineries, so get in the car and explore all the gorgeous scenery that Sonoma and neighboring Napa Valley have to offer.
Yosemite National Park
If outdoor adventures are more your style, visit Yosemite National Park for hiking, incredible landscapes and quiet relaxation. Although you won’t see the roaring waterfalls until after the park gets some snow, there are a few flows that run year-round. And if you’re looking for fall foliage, you won’t miss out on it here. The park’s black oaks and other deciduous trees will provide that blast of East Coast color against the green backdrop of evergreens. By visiting at this time of year, you’ll be treated to all the park has to offer with far fewer people. Try for a reservation at the Yosemite Lodge at the Falls in a cozy room at the base of the cliffs or pitch a tent and cuddle up in a sleeping bag at one of the park’s many campgrounds.
San Diego
For those of you who are still craving the sun, San Diego is the place is go. You won’t get that hot summer weather, but the sun still shines during the fall with mild temperatures and pleasant weather. Head to this southern California beach town and be sure to check out any of the many autumn food and art festivals, fairs, parades and more. Take a ferry ride across the bay to Coronado, a small town with an island feel and reserve a stay at the historic Hotel del Coronado, which offers ocean views, fine dining, spa services and all the amenities you need to feel pampered. Pull out all the stops with the hotel’s romance package, complete with chocolate and Champagne. You can’t beat the beach, no matter what time of year.
