Decorate candles with fragrant leaves

The holidays are over but that doesn’t mean you have to put away all your cheerful decorations. This easy project to decorate candles does double duty for your home: Not only is it pretty, but it smells good, too — perfect for the winter season!

The fresh fragrance of certain natural leaves can be pleasant around your home. Try your hand at decorating unscented pillar candles festooned with eucalyptus, rosemary or pine tree sprigs. Not only will your home smell wonderful, but this simple project is easy to create. Simply place the leaves horizontally around an unscented pillar candle and secure with a pretty ribbon. You’ll have a simple and fragrant decoration for your mantel or centerpiece.

You don’t need to light these candles to enjoy their beauty and fresh scent. If you do choose to light them, be sure to keep a close watch on them, as you don’t want the flame from the candle to ignite the natural greenery. Make sure the sprigs are cut to a length that is about 1-2 inches shorter than the top of the candle and never leave burning candles unattended.

Supplies:

  • 1 unscented, tall pillar candle
  • Ribbon long enough to tie around the candle and to make a bow
  • Scissors
  • A stapler
  • A handful (enough to cover all the way around the candle) of springs of fresh, fragrant greenery of your choice

Instructions:

  1. Trim the sprigs so they measure about 1-2 inches shorter than the top of the candle. Use enough to cover the candle all the way around.
  2. Open the stapler and begin to staple each sprig to the candle. The staple will easily hold the sprigs in the soft candle.
  3. Once all the sprigs are attached to the candle, cut your ribbon so it will wrap around the candle and cover the staples. Make sure to account for enough length to make a bow.
  4. Secure the ribbon tightly around the candle, make your bow and trim the edges.
