Dog behavior training gains traction
Cesar Millan is no stranger to misbehaving pets. Where others shrink away, he jumps at the chance to rescue another dog that may be on its last leg. Repeatedly, he has shown that there is no dog with behavior issues that are beyond help. The key is understanding how dogs think, and incorporating dog psychology into their training. Give them focus
Many pets misbehave due to a lack of focus. They display poor habits because of an unsatisfied need, and frequently that need is directly related to the particular breed of your dog. Cesar repeatedly coaches dog owners to learn as much as they can about their pet’s natural instincts, so that the training, exercise and care can be specifically tailored to the needs of their pet.

In this clip, Cesar coaches Dora, a small terrier mix with a slew of behavior issues. He demonstrates the introduction of new training tools, and when she resists, he eases her gently before the treadmill track and allows her to step up herself. He explains, “I can trigger it, or I can move her, but I’d rather her to be willing to do it.”
Allowing your dog to take the action you desire is a great way to teach them preferred behavior. As Cesar demonstrates, you should have patience with your pets, remain calm and offer them encouragement along the way. These simple tips will guide them toward the behavior corrections you seek.
Make them comfortable
As Dora is introduced to the treadmill for the very first time, her instinct tells her something is different. Cesar explains that this is normal behavior, and says, “That’s what I have to convey to her. Look, really, once you get on this treadmill nothing bad is going to happen.” He uses the leash to direct her focus, and he patiently waits for her to become more comfortable before the training session continues.
Easing pets into new experiences is a key tool for successful training. Creating positive experiences for them to relate to will assure them that the behavior you’re instructing is desired. In addition, trust will be built between you and your pet, creating a tone that improves future training sessions and life at home.
