Since it’s enjoyable work, you may not realize that preparing and maintaining a garden is serious workout.  As the weather warms up and you plan to get your garden ready for season, keep these garden warm up tips in mind.

Just like with any exercise routine, you need to stretch to loosen up your body before starting a workout. Gardening involves a lot of arm work—digging, weeding and tillings—as well as leg work from bending and squatting. Stretch your arms, shoulders back and legs before starting a big garden project.

Set attainable goals. Just as you wouldn’t plan to spend 4 hours doing low-impact aerobics, don’t set a garden plan that requires too many hours of constant work. Try to spread out tasks over a couple days to save you from getting terribly sore.

Don’t forget to take breaks and stay hydrated. Drink water as you work, and drink before you feel thirsty. Also remember to take a five-minute break every half hour or so. These short breaks will give your body some time to relax and let you enjoy the benefits of your hard work.

A garden plan that includes practical preparation as well as physical preparation will allow you healthy outdoor exercise that you feel good about doing!
