Ch-ch-ch-chia! The Chia Pet is a pop culture icon. It’s the gag gift that nobody wants to give or receive, but (despite the cheesy caricatures) it’s actually a pretty nice little container garden. If you’re too embarrassed to buy one, you can make your own—a great Earth Day craft for the kids!
To make your own “Chia Pet”, you will need potting soil, grass seed, old pantyhose and a plastic (or paper) cup. There are some instructions at Make It From Scratch, but the process is pretty self explanatory: put seeds and soil in the foot of the pantyhose, tie it off and set it on a cup of water. The soil will soak up water from the cup and grass will grow out of the top of the hose, just like Chia Pet hair!
Where this project gets really fun, especially for the kiddos, is with decorating the cup. What Chia Pets are known for are their faces, including Homer Simpson, Spongebob and even President Obama. To personalize your homemade Chia Pet, draw a face or body on the front of the cup!
